Peru's first Oscar-nominated (2010) film and winner of the Golden Bear at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, THE MILK OF SORROW is a tender and sumptuously photographed magic realist film, which tackles the tough social issues experienced by a generation of women during Peru's extended period of civil unrest in the 1980s.
Forceful lead character Fausta (Solier) is said to suffer from the 'Milk of Sorrow', an affliction purportedly transmitted through a mother's milk, which is part psychological and part spiritual-folkloric.
The sudden death of Fausta's mother forces her to confront her fears, and the unusual step that her mother took in order to protect her from being violated.
