THE ARTIST took the film world by storm in early 2011 when it had its premiere at Cannes. Now, following a dizzying festival run, Michel Hazanavicius' impossibly charming film is sure to woo UK audiences.
The story takes us back to 1920s Hollywood, where movie icon George Valentin (Dujardin, LITTLE WHITE LIES) faces a career crisis as the advent of the talkies effectively signals the end of the silent era. To make matters worse, the girl he helped make into a star (Bejo) is about to become the It girl of her generation.
Shot in black and white and virtually without dialogue, THE ARTIST might sound like little more than a cute homage, but its wonderfully imaginative script and heartfelt lead performances will see it rank high on critics' 'best of' lists in 2012.
