Elles

[18]

France 2012, 99 mins
Director: Małgorzata Szumowska
Starring: Juliette Binoche, Anaïs Demoustier, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing

Juliette Binoche is Anne, a well-heeled Parisian wife, mother and investigative journalist. She has been commissioned to write an exposé on how some female students turn to prostitution in order to cover their university fees. She arranges to meet and interview two headstrong young women, Alicja (Kulig) and Charlotte (Demoustier). Both are dedicated to their studies and show no coyness when it comes to discussing the intricacies of getting paid for sex.

After a while Anne starts to live vicariously through the girls' graphic stories of encounters with various clients, becoming voyeuristically transfixed to the point where she begins to examine her own life. Is she desperate for sexual liberation or is she simply looking for an escape from her stagnant bourgeois life? Challenging and provocative without ever being gratuitous, ELLES is a complex drama bolstered by Binoche's utterly fearless performance.
