A bold and vibrant retelling of Shakespeare's play, THE TEMPEST sees director Julie Taymor (FRIDA, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE) put her own idiosyncratic spin on another classic story. She has cast Helen Mirren (BRIGHTON ROCK) in the lead role of Prospera, changing the protagonist's gender in the process.
Prospera, the Duchess of Milan, is overthrown by her brother and forced to flee the mainland, eventually winding up on a mysterious island with her daughter Miranda (Jones, CEMETERY JUNCTION). Inhabited by a vile beast named Caliban (Hounsou, BLOOD DIAMOND), the island serves as a playing ground for a fierce intellectual battle between Prospera and its savage solitary citizen.
