A Road Movie with a Difference

Lars Ulrich is a heavy-metal god, the drummer of Metallica. Tom Spicer has a form of autism and lives in a care home. While Lars tours the world, playing to 30,000 metal fans every night, Tom dreams of meeting his hero.

Tom's siblings, Kate and Will, feel guilty that they don't do enough for their brother, so they make Tom's dream their mission. This is Mission to Lars. Of course, things do not go to plan. The dream of a Californian road-trip becomes a nightmare as Tom's disabilities, the dysfunctional family and heavy metal's labyrinthine backstage world thwart the Mission at every turn. Can the siblings pull it together and when they do, will the hairy world of metal welcome them?

Producer Kate Spicer will join us for Q&A live at City Screen after the film.

Mike Lindsay from Tunng scores the incidental music for the film, and the soundtrack also includes Bob Dylan, Devendra Banhart and Blur. All proceeds from the film is going to charity, and everyone involved has donated their time and music free of charge.

This is a brilliant, life-affirming film that will leave you pumping the air in celebration and skipping out of the cinema come the end credits.” Kerrang!
