City Screen/Theatre Royal Link

Alan Sillitoe developed his short story as a screenplay for this classic class conflict film from 1962.

During September this year, York-based Pilot Theatre will be performing the play at York Theatre Royal, and we'll have a quick introduction and two-minute video piece about the theatre production from Tom Bellerby, staff director of the stage adaptation.

City Screen is showing the original film, re-released in 2002, in which Tom Courtenay plays Colin, a teenager from a dismal home in a blue-collar area of Nottingham, who has bleak prospects in life and sinks into petty crime. When he is sent to borstal as punishment, the boy turns to long-distance running as an emotional and physical release.

Colin's rebellion continues in the face of the borstal regime, even when he is faced with the possibility of redemption, but through his defiance the boy finally achieves a feeling of self-worth.
