Following up his 2010 drama MAN AT BAT, prolific French director Christophe Honoré plumps for something a little sweeter with BELOVED.
Given the honour of closing the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Honoré's eighth feature pays homage to French musical comedies of the 1960s. The ever sublime Catherine Deneuve (POTICHE) takes the lead alongside her daughter Chiara Mastroianni as an ageing former prostitute recalling her wild heyday in 1960s Paris.
Spanning four decades, the film weaves together an intricate patchwork of historical events which backdrop the main characters' journeys. Like Honoré's 2007 film LOVE SONGS, this is infectious and life-affirming storytelling.
