John Carlos in Conversation at Stratford Picturehouse

Tuesday 29 May, 6.30

From the moment he raised his leather-gloved fist in a defiant gesture against racism at the 1968 Mexico Olympics, John Carlos's life would never be the same again. To millions of black people across the world this iconic demonstration spoke on their behalf, yet for John Carlos his action came at a very high personal and professional cost.

Now, 44 years after he gave his famous Black Power salute, John Carlos is coming to the UK to reveal how that protest left him ostracised by the athletics world.

John Carlos will be joined in conversation by the award-winning journalist Dave Zirin and together they will discuss the impact of that iconic moment on the life of John Carlos, and the impact it had on the American political establishment.
