THE CHILDREN’S HOUR (AKA THE LOUDEST WHISPER) (12A)
Tuesday 21 February, 1.00
Director: William Wyler. USA 1962. 108 mins.
Tickets £2.50 for the over-60s
This study of the devastating effect of malicious slander and implied guilt is William Wyler's second big-screen version of Lillian Hellman's controversial 1934 Broadway play. In Wyler's first version, THESE THREE made in 1936, the lesbian theme was entirely suppressed. In contrast, THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, somewhat belatedly, allowed the theme out of Hollywood's closet. Two schoolmistresses are publicly labelled lesbians by a vindictive pupil, despite the fact that one, Karen (Audrey Hepburn), has a boyfriend. The other teacher, Martha (Shirley MacLaine), is gradually forced to admit that she does in fact have feelings for Karen… with disastrous results.
An informal discussion hosted by film expert Graham Rinaldi will take place after the film.
Next month’s Reminiscence film, on Tuesday 20 March at the earlier time of 12.00, will be CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. Tickets will be £3.50 for this and all subsequent Reminiscence screenings at The Ritzy.
