DEEP STATE preview, introduced by Karen Mirza & Brad Butler

Thursday 10 May, 7.00

DEEP STATE is a collaboration between artists Karen Mirza and Brad Butler and author China Miéville. It is an audacious, semi-fantastic secret history of the opposing forces of popular protest and clandestine control; the struggle is told through archive material, contemporary footage and future speculation. The title comes from the Turkish term ‘Derin Devlet’, meaning ‘state within the state’, a shadowy nexus of special interests and covert relationships where real power is said to reside, and where fundamental decisions are made. This deep state is evoked as an amorphous submerged totality encroaching upon an accumulation of mass struggles, which connect through grainy portals, evading the panopticon-like gaze of the deep state.
