Anne Gyrithe Bonne’s fascinating documentary seeks to go beyond the mystique surrounding Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Having been under house arrest in Burma for almost 15 years before her release on 30 November 2010, Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the highest-profile yet most enigmatic political figures of the past few decades.
Here Gyrithe Bonne calls upon Aung San Suu Kyi’s closest friends, family members and allies to construct a portrait of a woman whose determination and unyielding devotion to her cause earned great recognition – the Nobel Peace Prize among them – but whose incarceration had a destructive effect on her loved ones.
