Synopsis

ALBERT NOBBS has been a personal passion for its star, co-writer and producer Glenn Close for nearly 30 years: she first played the eponymous character in a 1982 stage version of George Moore's short story.

It is no surprise, then, that Close dazzles in Rodrigo García's (MOTHER AND CHILD) film, putting in a shift well worthy of her recent Oscar nomination. In 19th-century Ireland, a woman (Close) has lived in disguise as a man for most of her adult life in order to work in a fancy Dublin hotel. Gorgeously shot and acted, ALBERT NOBBS examines the struggles women faced in order to lead independent lives in a strongly patriarchal society.
