The Berlin Philharmonic's New Year's Eve Gala Concert 2011

Following the success of last year’s live transmission, the Berlin Philharmonic’s New Year’s Eve Gala Concert will make a return to Picturehouse screens.

The Berliner Philharmoniker's musical director Sir Simon Rattle will welcome the New Year together with multi-ward-winning Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin, whose "combination of technical mastery with impeccable stylistic assurance" (George Hall, the Guardian) is set to offer an unforgettable experience.

Kissin's musicality, the depth and poetic quality of his interpretations, and his extraordinary virtuosity have placed him at the forefront of today's pianists.

A highlight of this Gala concert will be the performance of the Symphonic Dance No. 2, Op. 64, Piano Concerto A minor Op. 16 by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, to which Kissin will certainly give his own personal touch.

The Symphonic Dance No. 2, Op. 64, Piano Concerto A minor Op. 16 is the only concert created by Edvard Grieg. He composed it in Søllerød, where Grieg spent his honeymoon, in 1868.
