A haunting and thought-provoking allegory of man's destructive relationship with nature, THE HUNTER is a mark above your average lone-assassin thriller.
Nettheim's film, based on the novel by fellow Aussie, SLEEPING BEAUTY director Julia Leigh, follows Martin (Dafoe), a mercenary sent from Europe by a biotech corporation to track down a precious asset in the heart of the Tasmanian jungle. With nothing more than his wits, a hunting rifle and an assortment of animal traps, he sets out in search of the last Tasmanian Tiger, which has been listed as extinct since 1936. At first it looks as if his mission might turn into a wild goose chase, but fierce hostility from rival hunters in the region and numerous reported sightings of the creature only add to Martin's intrigue and determination.
THE HUNTER is a complex, moody and ultimately humbling film you will want to see again.
