UCC: Election

[15]

United States 1999, 103 mins
Director: Alexander Payne
Starring: Mamadou Zerbo, Chris Klein, Jessica Campbell, Reese Witherspoon

Before he dedicated himself solely to documenting the neuroses of depressed middle-aged men, Alexander Payne made ELECTION, a razor-sharp satire of high school life, American politics and the perverse intersection of the two. Starring Matthew Broderick (in the first of many against-type roles) and a then little-known Reese Witherspoon, the film has ambitions far beyond those of its adolescent peers — much like Tracy Flick, the iconic narcissist at its centre. It was selected by columnist, teen fiction author and certified Queen of Twitter Grace Dent.

Grace says: “It’s sharp, dark, hysterical and pretty much flawless. I love Tracy Flick, she’s the ultimate All American anti-heroine. When push comes to shove and our dream is in reach, I think there’s a little bit of Flick in all of us.”
