Jake Gyllenhaal’s Officer Taylor and his partner Zavala (Michael Peña) are worlds apart from Woody Harrelson’s corrupt cop in the recent hit RAMPART, for they truly believe that the good guys always win – but in the brutal ganglands of South Central LA, it’s a tough call. Crackheads gaffer-taping their troublesome kids in closets, gold-plated AK-47s hidden in pick-ups, and the sordid consequences of people-trafficking are all in a day’s work for these two.
Writer/director David Ayer leavens the often ferocious but always gripping action with much humour and humanity as Taylor and Zavala’s personal lives knit them ever closer together, and Anna Kendrick (UP IN THE AIR) and Natalie Martinez are great as their respective loves. But when Taylor and Zavala accidentally expose a cocaine-smuggling racket, major retribution is unleashed on them. Their bond is put to the ultimate test, and the winning is distinctly double-edged.
