CHINATOWN (15)
Wednesday 28 March, 8.30
This week California Classics presents CHINATOWN, the classic 1974 neo-noir film starring Jack Nicholson as private detective JJ ‘Jake’ Gittes. Hired by a woman to spy on her husband, Gittes soon uncovers a web of conspiracies involving murder, corruption and the Los Angeles water management system. The film was directed by Roman Polanski and written by Robert Towne; both men agreed that Los Angeles should be the essence of CHINATOWN. This is an L.A. movie rather than a Hollywood movie, with the city’s history playing its part in ensuring this was not, in Polanski’s words, “just another detective thing”.
