Wiseman (STATE LEGISLATURE) spent 12 weeks working in intimate quarters with the dance company, and the result is an ambitious yet unobtrusive account of the inner workings of one of France's most dedicated and passionate arts organisations.
Feeding his obsession with his subject (this is his third turn at spotlighting the art), the American filmmaker conducts this highly personal film with a strikingly assured hand.
He is, of course, no stranger to aesthetically driven films, and in capturing such sensual, if conventionally uncinematic, subjects, LA DANSE is as pure and as powerful as cinema gets.
