WINGS OF DESIRE and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, your guardian angel will be there to protect you, right?

The Gate has inherited the classic Christmas double-bill from the Scala, which celebrates the ongoing work of these guardian angels in our lives, and most importantly, over the Christmas season.

The first film is IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (U), the greatest of all Christmas films. George Bailey (James Stewart) has spent all his life giving to others, holding up the community and supporting his friends and family. When everything falls apart, and he is ready to jump to his death on Christmas Eve, Clarence, his guardian angel, comes to his aid.

Following that we have Wim Wenders’ cult classic WINGS OF DESIRE (15). Two angels are in Berlin and interact with various mortals, including an ageing writer blighted by memories of a devastated Germany; actor Peter Falk, on location shooting a film about the Nazi era; and a lonely trapeze artist, with whom one of the angels falls in love, prompting his desire to become mortal.
We’ll have hand-made mince pies and fresh mulled wine to keep you warm. Best buy one for your guardian angel, too!
