David Hockney: A Bigger Picture plus Q&A at The Gate

Thursdsay 2 February, 6.30

To coincide with the David Hockney exhibition at The Royal Academy, we are delighted to welcome director Bruno Wollheim to The Gate for a Q&A to discuss his award-winning documentary.

Shot single-handedly over three years and with unprecedented access, this fascinating documentary captures David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood.

One of the few films to record a major artist at work, it follows Hockney’s efforts to disengage from photography and find artistic and spiritual renewal by working outside for the first time, through the seasons, in all weathers.

It is at once a revealing portrait, a detailed examination of the creative process, and an intimate account of what inspires and motivates this world-famous artist as time runs out.
