A firm audience favourite at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Moretti's (THE SON'S ROOM) papal comedy is all about life's big decisions.
In the case of Cardinal Melville (Piccoli) it's a real humdinger: following the death of the pope he's been thrust straight to the top of the Catholic church by his peers. The problem is that he doesn't see himself as the right man for the job, so he flees the Vatican for a spot of soul-searching.
Meanwhile the remaining cardinals call in a therapist (Moretti himself) to talk Melville round (who they believe has retired to prepare for his inaugural speech). WE HAVE A POPE might be a thinly veiled jab at dogmatic principles, but it's nonetheless a charming, finely acted film that wears its infectious wry smile with pride.
