THE SOURCE (15)

Director: Radu Mihaileanu. Starring: Leïla Bekhti, Hafsia Herzi, Sabrina Ouazani. Belgium/Italy/France 2011. 125 mins. Arabic with English subtitles.

THE SOURCE is set in a small village somewhere between North Africa and the Middle East. For as long as anyone can remember, the women of the community have fetched water from a mountaintop spring in the blazing sun. Leila, a young new bride, urges the other women to go on love strike, meaning no more sex until the men run water to the village. Inspired by a true story, and in part a reimagining of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, THE SOURCE is a meditation on love and community. Mihaileanu (THE CONCERT) explores women’s lives and relationships, with men, with each other and with Islam and the Koran, debunking myths through his intelligently drawn characters and thoughtful blend of comedy and tragedy.
