As Christopher Nolan's enthralling Batman chronicle draws to a close with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, we bring you up to speed with an epic double bill...
Tuesday 17 July, 6.00
The new start to the Batman franchise under the helm of Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO) was more in the tone of the early Batman: Year One-style comics. As a young boy Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain, causing trauma and an obsession with revenge. After disappearing to the east, where he sought counsel from the honourable Ninja cult leader known as Ra's Al-Ghul, Wayne (Bale) returns to a decaying Gotham City overrun by organised crime and dangerous individuals manipulating the system. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, and a prototype armoured suit, leads him to take on a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong.

The follow-up to BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT reunited director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who once again played the man behind the mask. THE DARK KNIGHT takes Batman across the world in his quest to fight a growing criminal threat. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman has been making headway against local crime - until a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger, brilliant in his final role) unleashes a fresh reign of chaos across Gotham City. To stop this devious new menace - Batman’s most personal and vicious enemy yet - he will have to use every high-tech weapon in his arsenal and confront everything he believes in head-on.
