From the directorial team behind LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE comes another charming yet thought-provoking comedy, this time founded on an intriguing stew of creative self-absorption and unintended consequences.
Paul Dano plays nerdy novelist Calvin, who is suffering from writer’s block. His solution is to invent Ruby, his dream lover – who then materialises in his apartment.
Played by the film’s writer, Zoe Kazan (granddaughter of legendary director Elia), Ruby proves very real indeed, eventually unsettling Calvin with her partying and flirting. And so, having created her, he rewrites her character to better suit his selfish needs, which sure enough results in a substantial personality change.
Exploring the pair’s relationships with friends and family (Annette Bening as Calvin’s bohemian mother and Chris Messina as his dubious best pal are just great), RUBY SPARKS provides boundless wry humour, underpinned by some astute questions about managing romantic expectations.
