Elle (Binoche), a married gallery owner living in a Tuscan village, attends a lecture given by an English author (Shimell) on the subject of authenticity and fakery in art.
Afterwards she invites him on a drive, during which he is mistaken for her husband.
She doesn't contradict the assumption and the pair continue on their afternoon out, discussing life, love and art, and increasingly behaving like a long-married couple whose love has dwindled.
A fascinating ambivalence lies at the heart of the narrative: are they play-acting on a whim, or are they in fact a real couple who had been estranged?
