THE FUTURE (12A)
Director: Miranda July. Starring: Miranda July, Hamish Linklater, David Warshofsky, Isabella Acres, Joe Putterlik. Germany/USA 2011. 91 mins.

ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW writer-director July returns in typically charming fashion with a contemplative indie gem about confronting the stark realities of adulthood. After weighing up all the pros and cons, thirtysomething couple Sophie (July) and Jason (Linklater) decide to take the next big step in their relationship: they are going to adopt a cat called Paw-Paw. With the big day marked on the calendar, our couple soon begin to fret over the consequences of their commitment. This mog’s going to tie them down; they will be trapped in a round-the-clock routine for years to come. So, in a last-ditch bid to taste freedom, Sophie and Jason quit their jobs, cut off the internet and embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex.

ROMANTICS ANONYMOUS (12A)
Director: Jean-Pierre Améris. Starring: Benoît Poelvoorde, Isabelle Carré, Lorella Cravotta, Lise Lamétrie. France/Belgium 2011. 78 mins. French with English subtitles.

With his beloved chocolate business turning sour, socially awkward boss Jean-René (Poelvoorde, COCO BEFORE CHANEL) decides to enlist an extra pair of hands. Enter Angélique (Carré, THE REFUGE), a chronically shy young woman who shares Jean- René’s passion for all things sugar and sweet. She is the answer to his prayers, in ways he didn’t realise. Because while he is looking for a sales rep to keep his sinking ship afloat, she is in fact a gifted, albeit covert, chocolatière extraordinaire whose treats are legendary around town. And as the pair become more and more acquainted it is not long before chocolate is not the only sensual element in the air. Now their respective lack of self-confidence is the only thing left standing in the way of the happiness they so crave.
