The Magic Pudding

Australia 2000, 80 mins
Director: Robbert Smit, Karl Zwicky
Starring: Geoffrey Rush, John Cleese, Toni Collette, Sam Neill

Hearing his parents are still alive, Bluegum sets out to find them.

He meets sailor Bill, performing penguin Sam, and Albert, a cantankerous inexhaustible pudding who likes being eaten - if you can catch him.

Possum and Wombat, would-be pudding thieves, are soon in pursuit.

Bluegum, still looking for his parents, realises the answer lies with guzzling wombat Buncle, who will stop at nothing to get Albert in his jaws.

Together, the friends work out how to defeat this villain once and for all.

Australian artist Lindsay (subject of the 1994 film SIRENS) wrote and illustrated The Magic Pudding in 1918, to prove that children are more interested in food than in fairies.

It is still in print, and has been translated into 20 languages.

The vignettes Lindsay wrote had to be transformed to make them into a coherent 80-minute narrative, but his character designs needed little change.
