After THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ADÈLE BLANC-SEC, French auteur Luc Besson returns to more real-world territory with this story, of love winning out against a turbulent political backdrop, based on true events.
The protagonists are Burmese pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi (Yeoh, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON), who spent 15 years under house arrest until her release in 2010, and her writer lover Michael Aris (Thewlis, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS).
Theirs is an epic story of devotion and passion sacrificed for the greater human good. Yeoh approached Besson to helm the project based on his reputation for depicting strong women in his films, and Aung San Suu Kyi is surely his most remarkable heroine. THE LADY has been at the centre of much controversy in Burma, but it is essential viewing nonetheless.
