A lyrical, elegiac and supremely moving masterwork in which, in a solitary stone cottage, a son and his gravely ill mother share their dreams and fears.
Photographed with a special lens system, the tone of the film is drawn from the work of the German Romantic painters, especially Caspar David Friedrich's The Monk at the Sea, which Sokurov used as a guiding point in the film.
