The life and times of cellist Jacqueline du Pre provide the basis for this biographical drama featuring Emily Watson as the flamboyant and richly talented du Pre, who died in 1987 at the age of 42, suffering from multiple sclerosis.
Born into a middle-class English household, Jackie and her sister, Hilary (Rachel Griffiths), were both highly proficient musicians from an early age. Initially it was Hilary who was thought to be the more talented, but the emotional and mercurial Jackie soon outstripped her sister, rapidly achieving stardom as a young woman.
At the height of her career, Jackie appeared to have everything, but fate was to strike cruel blows, forcing her to confront the depths of her life as an artist, a lover and a sister.
