The Regal cinema opened on this site in 1937.
In 1972 it was redeveloped as a two-screen ABC cinema, and operated as such until its closure in 1997.
The site of the Regal was taken on by Wetherspoons and reopened in 1999, with England's largest pub taking over the ground floor and the three-screen Arts Picturehouse occupying the remaining space.
The opening of the Arts Picturehouse coincided with the closure of the Arts Cinema in Market Passage, which was forced to close when the Arts Theatre sold the property to cover the theatre's losses.
