Picturehouse Water

 

City Screen has teamed up with international children’s charity Plan, to bring running water to children in Niger, West Africa by launching its own brand of water.

Map of AfricaTen pence from every bottle of water bought at a Picturehouse Cinema is being used by Plan UK to provide boreholes to communities in the Dosso region of West Niger, one of the driest regions in the world.

Forget the Olympics or the European Championships – 2012’s hottest sporting event is the Picturehouse Year of Sports, which will raise money for our partner charity, Plan. 
Over the past four years, we have been supporting water and sanitation projects in Niger – a country where water is precious and over half the population are forced to drink dirty, dangerous water. Our aim is to provide access to safe drinking water, and train and educate children and adults about good hygiene. Since we started in 2008, we have raised a total of £95,627, built three boreholes and given nearly a thousand people access to clean water. But there is always more to do. Our next project will provide 990 people in Bangou Fada Rouzou, Niger, with safe drinking water for the first time by constructing a borehole, as well as providing blocks of school latrines for students. Vital hygiene and sanitation education will also be provided in the community.
We are aiming to raise a total of £30,000 this year to fund this borehole. Our last fundraising weekend raised a massive £15,000, so we know we can do it. We hope you, our customers and friends, will get us to this fantastic total through your generous gifts and sponsorship, as our staff take part in some amazing activities.
At the heart of our Year of Sport is the Great Picturehouse Bike Relay. Starting at the Belmont, Aberdeen, we’re aiming to cycle to each and every one of the 20 Picturehouse cinemas, finishing all the way down in Exeter.
But that’s not all – the staff at every Picturehouse will be organising their own great sporting feats. Ask in your local cinema – and if you want to help by getting involved, it would be great to have you on board. We’ll be taking some inspiration from Plan’s own website. Who knows where your next trip to the cinema might end?
