THE TRUTH BEHIND 'I WALKED BY NIGHT'

Thursday 17 February, 6.00

When the memoirs of self-crowned 'King of the Norfolk Poachers' Frederick Rolfe were first published in 1935 they became an instant rural East Anglian classic. Yet ‘I Walked by Night’ was written and first discovered in Suffolk, where Fred spent the last twenty years of his life, and where it was recently voted one of the favorite local books of all time. Now his true story is the subject of a new documentary.

Local historian Charlotte Paton, who was brought up in Suffolk, began to suspect her cottage had once been home to Rolfe and decided she had to find out more. Drawing on lost manuscripts, intriguing interviews and local records - including those at Suffolk Record Office and the Regimental Museum in Bury St Edmunds - this absorbing film provides fascinating insights into our rural past and the illicit thrills of poaching.

We are delighted that director Peter Hodges and Charlotte Paton will take part in a Q&A session following the screening, hosted by The Movie Evangelist.
