The Refuge

France 2010, 88 mins
Director: Francois Ozon
Starring: Isabelle Carré, Melvil Poupaud

Icon of the new 'New Wave' François Ozon (SWIMMING POOL) has rarely reached the heights of his early films, but following a successful world premiere at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, THE REFUGE looks like living up to the esteemed director's billing.

In heart-rending fashion it tells the story of two drug-addled Parisian lovers, Mousse (Carré, PRIVATE FEARS IN PUBLIC PLACES) and Louis (Poupaud, 44 INCH CHEST), whose affluence and carefree outlook on life have supplemented their dangerous addiction.

After a particularly heavy binge Louis overdoses and Mousse, discovering she is pregnant, flees from the city in a fit of panic and uncertainty, and makes for her brother's refuge camp.

Ozon's film is sure to stir up controversy, but it's compassionate, modest and sumptuously crafted nonetheless.
