Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted 2D

United States 2012, 93 mins
Director: Eric Darnell
Starring: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Noah Baumbach, David Schwimmer

DreamWorks' third 3D animated MADAGASCAR epic is arguably the most inventive and certainly the funniest so far, not least because the directors have hired a new co-writer, Noah Baumbach (FANTASTIC MR FOX, GREENBERG), and freshened up the franchise with some new characters.

Having decamped to Monte Carlo in search of their friends the penguins, regulars Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock), Melman (David Schwimmer) and Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) are pursued by Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand) - who is determined to add Alex's head to her trophy room - and the rather friendlier Gia the jaguar (Jessica Chastain) and Stefano the sea lion (Martin Short).

The plot concerns a failed heist, but that's almost immaterial to the abundant gags - visual and otherwise - that comfortably and entertainingly sustain the film's 93 minutes.
