WOMAN IN A DRESSING GOWN (PG)

Tuesday 11 September

Director: J. Lee Thompson. Starring: Yvonne Mitchell, Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Syms. UK 1957. 94 mins.

An underrated minor classic of early British social realism from director J. Lee Thompson (ICE COLD IN ALEX, CAPE FEAR), this quietly devastating film centres on put-upon housewife Amy (Mitchell), whose apparently ordered life rapidly spirals out of control when she discovers her husband Jim (Quayle) has been having an affair with his beautiful young colleague Georgie (Syms). An intense kitchen-sink potboiler with a striking feminist twist, driven by marvellously intense performances and a wonderful script, WOMAN IN A DRESSING GOWN thoroughly deserves revisiting, and is presented here in a stunning new restoration.
