LAURA (PG)
Director: Otto Preminger. Starring: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price, Judith Anderson. USA 1944. 88 mins.
This classic film noir finds its way back on UK screens courtesy of the BFI, which has rereleased it as the latest in its special restorations. When New York detective Mark McPherson (Andrews, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES) sets about investigating the murder of a beautiful young ad executive named Laura Hunt (Gene, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN) the last thing he expects to find is love. But that’s precisely what happens as McPherson systematically interviews those closest to the victim – her decadent mentor (Webb), socialite aunt (Anderson), loyal maid (Dorothy Adams) and poisonous fiancé (Price) – and gradually becomes obsessed with her. Otto Preminger’s (THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM) elegant story of death and desire remains a compelling watch.
