Ninety years since its original release and THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI (U) is still a disturbing masterpiece. This screening will feature an all-new soundtrack composed and performed live by experts in silent film rescoring, Minima.
The film, a true classic of German expressionist cinema, follows the travelling Dr Caligari and his mysterious exhibit, a hypnotised sleepwalker named Cesare, who has the ability to see the future. Feeding on the fear of the outsider, the film’s distorted sets and sinister shadows create a paranoid world where unnerving characters closely guard their fragile grip on sanity.
Minima’s original soundtrack strikes up an unexpected relationship with the film, teasing out melancholy and grim humour. Drums, bass, guitar and cello stalk the images, while their unique sonic palette provides an intensity to complement the movie’s unsettling experience of mistrust and madness.
